About

Sailors Handmade is a family run workshop where we design and make high quality leather goods using our hands, simple hand tools and fine materials.

All of our leather goods are made with high quality vegetable tanned leather, traditional linen thread and mostly natural, biodegradable, non-toxic materials which are mostly locally sourced.  Each item is cut by hand, assembled by hand, stitched by hand and finished by hand, one at a time with care and attention.  Therefore the item that our customers receive are unique, exclusive and made to last.

We currently specialise in bespoke work although we are developing a regular product line.  If you are interested in placing an order for a bespoke leather item then please see the ‘Bespoke‘ page or ‘Contact Us‘.

Sailors Handmade is based in Walsall, West Midlands which is, to this day, known to be at the heart of the leather industry in England.  It is the home of a large number of saddlers, suppliers of bridal leather, hardware and the Walsall Leather Museum where we have a workshop on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays where we are happy to receive visitors (please call in advance to ensure one of us is there to receive you.  On the remaining days of the week we receive visitors on an appointment only basis.  We look forward to seeing you and hearing from you.

We are very enthusiastic about leather and always happy to discuss this wide and vast subject.  Sailors was born out of  the long standing love of leather and making things by hand.  In this world of mass production and throw away culture there is a resurgence in demand for things that are done slowly, properly and to last.  We have grown and continue to do so, organically and we intend never to become a commercial mass producer of leather goods.  Rather we are working to serve those who appreciate true workmanship.  Your interest is key in keeping these traditional skills and trades going.
